Our Epic Honeymoon Across Colorado

As our wedding anniversary approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on our elopement in Crested Butte and the unforgettable honeymoon that followed. Every moment of that experience was filled with magic, love, and the incredible beauty of Colorado’s landscapes. We want to share our journey with you, as it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Starting Our Journey

The day after our wedding marked the start of our epic honeymoon across Colorado. We began with a hearty breakfast at McGill's in Crested Butte, a charming little diner that served us delicious, filling meals. The perfect fuel for the journey ahead. After breakfast, I arranged a relaxing massage for Soraya. She had been carrying the stress of wedding planning on her shoulders, and it was wonderful to see her unwind and enjoy some much-needed pampering.

Discovering Nature’s Beauty

From Crested Butte, we embarked on a scenic drive through the mountains. The winding roads and towering peaks made for a picturesque journey. Along the way, we stumbled upon a field of old-man-of-the-mountain flowers. The sight of these vibrant blooms against the backdrop of majestic mountains was too tempting to pass by. We stopped, took a hike, and immersed ourselves in the beauty of nature. It was a moment of serenity and connection, reminding us of why we chose Colorado for our honeymoon.

Telluride Adventures

Our next destination was Telluride, a charming town nestled in a box canyon. We arrived hungry and excited to explore, so we headed straight to Baked in Telluride, a local favorite known for its delicious baked goods and hearty meals. After a satisfying meal, we rode the gondola, which offered stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The experience was breathtaking, giving us a bird’s eye view of the incredible landscape we were about to explore.

In Telluride, we enjoyed a leisurely day, wandering through the town, taking in the historic architecture, and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. The town’s charm, combined with the spectacular natural scenery, made it a perfect stop on our journey.

Ouray’s Relaxing Hot Springs

From Telluride, we made our way to Ouray, a small town often referred to as the “Switzerland of America” due to its stunning alpine scenery. We stayed overnight in Ouray, eager to start our hot springs tour the next day. Our first stop was the Wiesbaden Spa, a historic spa with multiple mineral pools and even a cave to soak in. The warm, mineral-rich waters were incredibly relaxing, providing a perfect way to unwind and rejuvenate.

After a day of soaking in the hot springs, we ventured out to find some local cuisine. We stumbled upon The Yankee Girl, a quaint little restaurant that served some of the best burgers we’ve ever had. The atmosphere was cozy, the food was delicious, and it was a perfect end to a relaxing day.

Scenic Drives and Stunning Views

The next leg of our journey took us down the Million Dollar Highway, one of the most scenic drives in the United States. The highway offered jaw-dropping views of rugged cliffs, deep gorges, and snow-capped peaks. Along the way, we found a spot that reminded us of pictures of Switzerland. We couldn’t resist stopping for an impromptu portrait session, capturing the stunning landscape as a backdrop to our memories.

Pagosa Springs

Our journey continued to Pagosa Springs, a town famous for its natural hot springs. We checked into a charming inn and immediately headed for the hot springs. The warm, soothing waters were a perfect way to relax after a day of travel. We spent hours soaking, talking, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

In the afternoon, we visited Pagosa Springs Baking, a local bakery known for its delicious pastries and baked goods. The smell of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air as we walked in. We enjoyed a delightful lunch, sampling a variety of treats, and even picked up a few goodies for the road.

Thrills in Cotopaxi

With some time to spare before our next destination, we decided to take an ATV tour up a mountain in Cotopaxi. This was an exhilarating experience! Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, taking us through rugged terrain and pointing out interesting sights along the way. The highlight of the tour was reaching a vantage point that offered an amazing view into the valley below. Soraya’s laughter and excitement were infectious, making this adventure one of the highlights of our honeymoon.

A Culinary Delight in Florence

After our thrilling adventure in Cotopaxi, we had a craving for a good steak. We found the perfect place at Quincy's Steak and Spirits in Florence, Colorado. This restaurant was unique—it offered only one meal on the menu, and it was perfect. The steak was the best we’ve ever had, cooked to perfection and melting in our mouths. The simplicity of the menu and the quality of the food made this dining experience unforgettable.

Final Relaxation at Desert Reef Hot Springs

The last stop of our journey was Desert Reef Hot Springs, a secluded and tranquil retreat. Each unit had its own private hot tub filled with natural spring water. We spent our final night in Colorado soaking in the hot tub, gazing up at the stars, and sipping on our favorite drinks. The peacefulness of the surroundings and the warmth of the water made it the perfect way to end our honeymoon. We felt completely relaxed and at peace, not wanting to leave this little paradise.

Reflecting on Our Journey

Looking back on our honeymoon, we are filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared and the memories we created. Colorado’s natural beauty provided the perfect backdrop for our adventure, offering a mix of relaxation, excitement, and breathtaking scenery. From the charming towns of Crested Butte, Telluride, and Ouray to the natural wonders of Pagosa Springs and Desert Reef Hot Springs, every stop on our journey was unique and memorable.

Our honeymoon was not just a vacation but a journey of connection, exploration, and love. We discovered new places, enjoyed new experiences, and deepened our bond as a couple. Each day brought something new and exciting, and we are so grateful for the moments we shared and the memories we created.

We hope our story inspires others to explore the beauty of Colorado and create their own unforgettable adventures. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, a romantic getaway, or simply a journey of exploration, Colorado offers something for everyone. Its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and welcoming people make it a perfect destination for creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Practical Tips for Your Colorado Adventure

If you’re planning a trip to Colorado, here are a few tips from our experience to help you make the most of your journey:

  1. Acclimate to the Altitude: Spend a night or two in a lower altitude area like Denver to help your body adjust to the higher elevations in places like Crested Butte and Telluride. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, and it’s better to be prepared.

  2. Stay Hydrated: The high altitude can dehydrate you more quickly, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout your trip.

  3. Dress in Layers: Colorado’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperature changes throughout the day. Dressing in layers allows you to stay comfortable no matter the conditions.

  4. Take Your Time: The beauty of Colorado is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Don’t rush from one place to another—take the time to soak in the scenery, explore the towns, and enjoy the journey.

  5. Plan for Spontaneity: While it’s good to have an itinerary, leave some room for spontaneous adventures. Some of our favorite moments came from unplanned stops and impromptu decisions.

  6. Respect Nature: Colorado’s natural beauty is a treasure, and it’s important to respect and preserve it. Follow Leave No Trace principles, stay on designated trails, and be mindful of wildlife.

  7. Enjoy the Local Cuisine: Colorado has a vibrant food scene, with many local restaurants offering delicious and unique dishes. Don’t miss the opportunity to try local specialties and enjoy the culinary delights the state has to offer.

We hope these tips help you plan your own Colorado adventure and create memories as wonderful as ours. Our honeymoon was a journey of a lifetime, and we are so grateful for every moment we spent in this beautiful state. Colorado, with its breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality, will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Happy travels!
